An Introduction to Mallorca

mallorca-harbour.jpgA pearl set in a deep turquoise sea; Mallorca is one of the Mediterranean’s most popular holiday destinations, offering a wide range of attractions to suit all tastes. In the words of the writer Gertrude Stein, it is “a little paradise where visitors can find all they need to be happy”. Mallorca is a mini continent being the largest of the Balearic Islands with its name being derived from the Latin Insula Maior meaning larger island, later becoming Maiorica.

Mallorca is a true vacation paradise with a perfect mixture of beautiful beaches, style and a thriving arts scene, culture, charm and history. There is a remarkable variety of options for the visitor; you are able to choose from stylish resort areas or virgin beaches and coves along the breathtaking Tramontana mountain range. Mallorca’s varied and captivating scenery has made the island a dream place for film-makers and numerous celebrities who chose to reside there including the Spanish Royal family who traditionally spend summers in their Palace in Palma.

Two mountainous ranges give way to the 554 kms of sensationally beautiful coastline.  There are a staggering amount of clean safe beaches, with inviting crystal clear waters, offering flat shelving shorelines. There are plenty of small coves with fine sand and transparent water, often tinged with the beautiful reflection of the cliffs lined with pine trees. The novelist Georges Sand describes some magical moments, "in Majorca, I was able to contemplate the ocean such as I have dreamed it to be, as crystal-clear and as blue as the sky ... every step brought us a new vista more enchanting than the one before”.
The twisting roads take you along dramatic cliffs, high mountains and deep valleys where you can stop to take a moment to view the spectacular scenery with goosebumps on your arms.
